The Blessing of the Fire: Why Our Present Crises Are Forcing Our Greatness
By David Alani Ige, (The Scribe)
Take a look around our nation today. The economy is biting hard, inflation is suffocating the common man, and our political structures seem to be failing at every turn. Everywhere you look, there is trouble. The natural response is to complain, to pray for an easier life, and to curse the fire burning around us.
But what if I told you that this exact hardship is the greatest blessing in disguise we could possibly ask for?
History and science share one undeniable truth: human beings only make the absolute best use of their talents when they are backed into a corner. Comfort breeds complacency, but crisis demands genius. For decades, our nation and our people have been too comfortable—relying on oil money, lazy political structures, and predictable routines. Now that the comfort has been violently stripped away, we are finally waking up.
The Science of Our Survival
This is not mere motivation; it is a psychological fact. Neuroscientists have long proven that our brains are hardwired to perform at their absolute peak only when we are under threat. When life is easy, the human mind filters out unconventional, brilliant ideas. But in a severe crisis, the brain drops its filters—forcing rapid problem-solving and raw creativity.
Look at the Nigerian youth today. Driven by the "trouble" of unemployment and a failing system, they have bypassed the government entirely, building tech startups, dominating global music, and creating digital economies out of thin air. Necessity did not just birth invention; it birthed a revolution.
The Grinding Stone of Greatness
The ancient Stoic philosophers understood this perfectly. Seneca once wrote, "A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials." We have been crying about the friction, forgetting that it is the only thing that can polish us.
When a human being's survival or livelihood is violently threatened, procrastination dies. The fear of failure vanishes because failure is no longer an option. The deep reservoirs of our latent talents are finally tapped.
The Verdict
We must stop praying for an easy life. The trouble we are currently facing—whether personal, economic, or political—is the grinding stone provided by the universe to sharpen us. It is forcing our local governments to rethink survival. It is forcing families to budget with financial brilliance. It is forcing citizens to finally demand true accountability.
Do not let this crisis go to waste. You are standing in the exact crucible where greatness is manufactured.
