ABUJA — In what will go down as one of the most monumental anti-corruption verdicts in Nigeria's democratic history, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the final forfeiture of an astonishing ₦180.4 billion worth of properties linked to the immediate past Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
The judgment, delivered on Wednesday, marks a massive victory for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which successfully argued that the staggering wealth was illegitimately acquired during Malami’s tenure as the nation’s Chief Law Officer.
Inside the Seized Empire
The court ordered the permanent forfeiture of 48 high-value properties spread across Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, and Kebbi states. According to EFCC documents, the recovered assets include:
Multiple luxury hotels operating in premium districts.
A privately-owned university campus.
Several sprawling residential mansions and commercial estates.
The Ultimate Irony
For eight years, Abubakar Malami served as the chief enforcer of the law and the primary driver of the Federal Government's anti-corruption crusade under the previous administration. That a man who was entrusted with prosecuting financial crimes has now been stripped of a ₦180 billion illicit empire is a chilling reminder of the deep-rooted rot within the Nigerian political elite.
The Message to Current Leaders
This landmark judicial forfeiture sends a powerful shockwave through the corridors of power. It is a clear signal that the wheels of justice, though sometimes slow, will eventually catch up with those who loot the public treasury.
Ayekooto Media commends the EFCC and the judiciary for this fearless ruling. However, we demand that these forfeited assets must not be re-looted by the current system. The ₦180 billion recovered must be transparently auctioned and channeled directly into funding grassroots infrastructure, rural healthcare, and education for the ordinary Nigerian.
