IBADAN / ABUJA — The successful military rescue of the 44 schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area has rapidly transformed into a heated political battle between the Oyo State Government and federal authorities.

Following the victims' release after 56 days in captivity, Governor Seyi Makinde made a shocking statewide broadcast calling on the United Nations (UN) and international human rights bodies to conduct an independent investigation into the abduction and the subsequent rescue operations.

While the Oyo State House of Assembly quickly threw its weight behind the Governor, declaring that an international probe is necessary to establish the absolute truth and prevent future attacks, the move has triggered massive backlash in Abuja.

The Senate Rejects Foreign Intervention

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Senate officially rejected Governor Makinde’s call for international interference. Lawmakers insisted that the Oriire kidnapping and rescue remain strictly a domestic security matter that falls under the purview of Nigeria's sovereign defense institutions.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate, Senator Adams Oshiomhole specifically cautioned Governor Makinde against dragging foreign bodies into internal security operations, warning that such moves undermine the integrity of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Instead of backing the call for a probe, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the military high command for the strategic execution of the rescue mission that brought the Oyo State residents home safely.

Oyo APC Fires Back

The political temperature within Oyo State has also reached a boiling point. The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) released a scathing statement condemning Makinde’s broadcast.

The opposition party described the Governor’s request for a UN probe as "shameful, shocking, and the height of ineptitude." The APC accused Makinde of attempting to politicize a national security victory to cover up his administration's initial failure to secure the state's borders and protect the schools in the Oke-Ogun/Ogbomoso axis.

What Happens Next?

As the rescued children and teachers continue to receive medical and psychological care in Ibadan, the political rift between the Oyo State Government and the federal establishment deepens. Political observers are watching closely to see if Makinde will formally petition the international community or back down in the face of the overwhelming federal opposition.
