FG Halts Proposed WAEC, NECO Fee Hike for 2027 Pending Stakeholder Consultations
By Ayekooto Media News Desk
ABUJA — The Federal Government has officially suspended the proposed upward review of examination fees for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) ahead of the 2027 examination cycle.
The suspension was announced to allow for a comprehensive review and wider consultations with key players in the nation’s education sector.
According to a directive from the Ministry of Education, the government is prioritizing the masses and ensuring that educational policies do not disenfranchise students. The Ministry explicitly noted that no fee increment will be implemented until thorough, nationwide discussions are fully concluded.
To guarantee that any future decision is fair, transparent, and sustainable, the Federal Government has outlined a broad spectrum of stakeholders who must be consulted before any financial adjustments are made. These include:
The respective examination bodies (WAEC and NECO)
State Governments
Private and public school owners
Parents and guardians
Organized labour unions
Other critical education stakeholders
The Ministry emphasized that this temporary halt is necessary to ensure that any future policies do not undermine the fundamental right to—and access to—quality education for Nigerian students.
This suspension comes as a significant relief to parents and guardians across the country who have been expressing mounting concerns over the rising cost of education and the general economic realities. By hitting the brakes on the proposed 2027 fee hike, the government is signaling a commitment to inclusive policymaking that considers the financial burden on the average Nigerian family.
