EDITORIAL: The 2026 NIMC Deadline — A Wake-Up Call to the Grassroots Before You Are Cut Off!
By David Alani Ige | Publisher, Ayekooto Media
The Ayekooto bird has flown across the corridors of power in Abuja and brought back a message of absolute urgency. To the farmers in Oke-Ogun, the market women in Ogbomoso, the artisans in Ibadan, and every ordinary citizen across the 774 Local Governments: You have until the end of this year, 2026, to secure your National Identification Number (NIN).
A few weeks ago, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the groundbreaking NIMC Act 2026 into law, effectively tearing down the old 2007 legislation. With this stroke of the pen, the President issued a sweeping, non-negotiable mandate to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC): Every single Nigerian must be captured in the national database by December 2026.
If you think this is just another empty government threat, you are making a grave mistake.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?
Under this new digitized framework, citizens who fail to register will practically become "ghosts" within the Nigerian system. If you do not have a NIN by the end of 2026, here is the brutal reality of what awaits you:
Total Financial Blackout:Your bank accounts will be frozen, and you will not be able to open a new one. Accessing consumer credit, loans, or business grants will become completely impossible.
Exclusion from Government Subsidies:Whether it is agricultural fertilizers for farmers, poverty alleviation palliatives, or student loans, the government will only distribute resources to those captured in the NIMC database.
Denial of Civic Services: You will not be able to process a driver's license, apply for an international passport, or register for major examinations like WAEC and NECO.
The Era of "Double Registration" is Dead
For those thinking they can play the system, the new NIMC Act 2026 comes with severe fangs. The Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has made it clear that the newly upgraded biometric system validates data in real-time. It is now impossible to have two identities.
More importantly, the new law is ruthless against identity fraud. Anyone caught trying to manipulate the system, duplicate identities, or illegally access the database will face a minimum of five years imprisonment, while corporate bodies face fines up to ₦20 million.
A Call to Action for Grassroots Leaders
Currently, NIMC has captured about 136 million Nigerians, but millions more—mostly in our rural and grassroots communities—are still left behind.
This is a direct call to all Local Government Chairmen, traditional rulers, Baales, and community leaders across Oyo State. Do not let your people be economically and socially disenfranchised. Mobilize the grassroots. Sensitize the rural populace. NIMC has deployed front-end partners deep into the communities to make this process easier.
Do not wait until the last minute when the panic begins. Go out today, find the nearest NIMC registration center, and secure your identity. The digital doors of Nigeria are closing by the end of 2026. Make sure you are inside before they shut completely.
