IBADAN, OYO STATE — In an unprecedented and sweeping state broadcast today, July 13, 2026, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde called for the intervention of the United Nations (UN) and international human rights mechanisms to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and subsequent rescue of pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area.
While expressing immense relief over the safe return of the victims kidnapped from Oloru, Eshinle, and Yawata communities, Governor Makinde delivered a somber address, confirming the tragic loss of eight lives, including three teachers and five security personnel, during the ordeal.
The Ultimate Price Paid
The Governor mourned the victims, publicly naming the heroes and educators who lost their lives to the terrorists:
Mr. Joel Adesiyan (Killed on the day of the abduction within the school premises)
Deacon John Olaleye (Died in captivity)
Mr. Michael Oyedokun (Brutally murdered in a viral video by terrorists)
He also honored the joint security operatives and members of the Oyo State Amotekun Corps who fell in the line of duty, including Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Mr. Adegun Shuaibu, Mr. Issa Saliu, Mr. Rafiu Ayuba, and an unnamed soldier. Mr. Bamidele, who sustained serious injuries, is currently receiving treatment.
Border Security and Old Oyo National Park
Governor Makinde noted that while the Old Oyo National Park falls under the constitutional jurisdiction of the Federal Government, the state will immediately deploy measures to protect its citizens.
"The Oyo State government will immediately strengthen oversight of all access routes leading into and out of the Old Oyo National Park through our adjoining local government areas," Makinde declared, stating that clear protocols will be established to prevent criminals from using the borders as safe passages.
The Call for a UN Probe
In a bold closing statement, Governor Makinde stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident are "sufficiently grave and unusual to warrant independent scrutiny."
Calling on the United Nations system, the Governor demanded a transparent account to uncover any institutional failures, negligence, or collusion.
"This is not about politics. It is about justice for the victims, reassurance for our people, and restoring public confidence that every Nigerian child can go to school without fear," Makinde concluded.
Citizens are urged to report suspicious activities to the Oyo State Toll-Free Emergency Line: 615.
