BREAKING: Oyo Police Arrest Three Over Alleged Killing of Family of Six in Lagelu

Suspects Allegedly Invaded Family Home, Stole Cash and Property Before Attack — Police

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged murder and robbery of a family of six at Oloba Village in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The victims comprised a father, mother and their four children. According to the Police Command, the incident occurred on September 22, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m.

The suspects were identified as Hammed Akinbami, Akinbami Ojo and Padonu Edward, all reportedly residents of Oloba Village. They were arrested following intelligence received by the Police Command on October 2 concerning the incident.

HOW THE ATTACK ALLEGEDLY HAPPENED

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects allegedly invaded the residence of Ifeanyi Chukwu, his wife and their four children.

The police said the suspects were armed with a locally made Dane gun, two cutlasses and a club.

During the alleged robbery, the assailants reportedly stole ₦200,000 in cash, a Boxer motorcycle, a Doma machine fitted with a chainsaw and a spraying machine belonging to the family.

The Police Command further alleged that Hammed Akinbami shot the husband, while Akinbami Ojo and Padonu Edward attacked the wife and struck her on the head with a club.

The police said the attack subsequently resulted in the deaths of the family members, with the bodies allegedly dumped in a nearby river.

The Command also alleged that two of the children were tied by their hands and legs and thrown into the river, while the other victims were similarly disposed of there.

POLICE RECOVER EXHIBITS

Following the investigation, detectives visited the scene and recovered several items allegedly connected to the crime.

Among the exhibits recovered were the family's Boxer motorcycle, one locally made Dane gun, two cutlasses and the club allegedly used during the attack.

The police also said the three suspects confessed during interrogation to their alleged involvement in the crime. However, the allegations remain subject to further investigation and due legal process.

ONE BODY RECOVERED AS SEARCH CONTINUES

The Police Command disclosed that the remains of the wife have been recovered, while efforts are continuing to locate and recover the remains of the other victims allegedly dumped in the river.

The suspects and the case file have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, for further investigation and necessary legal action.

POLICE COMMISSIONER ORDERS THOROUGH INVESTIGATION

The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed a thorough investigation into the incident.

The Commissioner also ordered that anyone found culpable in the alleged crime should be brought to justice.

The development has heightened concerns over the safety of residents in rural communities around Ibadan and underscores the importance of effective community policing, intelligence gathering and rapid security response.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine the individual roles of those arrested.

The suspects remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
