POLAM’S MEGA EMPOWERMENT: A COMMENDABLE INVESTMENT IN THE PEOPLE OF OLD IREPO

The Mega Empowerment Programme organised by the Member representing Irepo/Orelope/Olorunsogo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. (Dr.) Prince Olaide Lateef Mohammed, popularly known as POLAM, deserves commendation.

The programme, which brought together constituents from the three local government areas, featured the distribution of practical empowerment items, including mini-trucks, motorcycles, fertilisers, deep freezers and other forms of business and livelihood support.

What makes such an initiative worthy of recognition is the practical nature of the intervention. Empowerment is most meaningful when it provides people with tools that can help them earn a living, expand existing businesses or establish new economic activities.

POLAM's latest initiative also comes against the background of a series of constituency interventions attributed to his representation since his assumption of office in 2023. These have included agricultural support, scholarships and educational assistance, skills acquisition, cash grants, motorcycles and other livelihood interventions across Irepo, Orelope and Olorunsogo.

In 2024, for instance, reports documented empowerment and skills-acquisition programmes involving 220 constituents, while agricultural support, including fertiliser distribution, was also extended to farmers across the three local government areas.

The latest Mega Empowerment Programme goes a step further with a new five-series initiative reportedly targeting 1,000 constituents across the federal constituency. The reported beneficiaries are to receive different forms of support, including vehicles, mini-trucks, motorcycles, deep freezers, generators, POS machines with cash and salon equipment with financial support.

Beyond the items themselves, there is an important principle behind such interventions: economic empowerment should be about creating capacity, not merely distributing relief.

A motorcycle can become a means of livelihood. A deep freezer can support a small-scale food business. Agricultural inputs can help a farmer increase production. A mini-truck can become an income-generating asset. Properly utilised, each intervention has the potential to create a multiplier effect beyond the immediate beneficiary.

It is therefore commendable that Hon. POLAM has continued to place empowerment and opportunity creation among the visible components of his representation.

His constituency also remains strategically important to the wider development of Oke-Ogun. Irepo, Orelope and Olorunsogo are predominantly agrarian communities with significant human and economic potential. Interventions that strengthen agriculture, small businesses, youth enterprise and household incomes can contribute to broader local economic development.

It is equally important that beneficiaries see the assistance not simply as gifts, but as seed capital and productive assets entrusted to them for sustainable economic advancement.

The Scribe therefore commends Hon. (Dr.) Prince Olaide Lateef Mohammed for the Mega Empowerment Programme and, more importantly, for the emphasis on giving constituents practical means of improving their economic circumstances.

As POLAM's representation progresses, the expectation from the people will naturally remain high: more empowerment, more educational opportunities, more employment pathways, more infrastructure and sustained attention to the development needs of Irepo, Orelope and Olorunsogo.

For now, however, yesterday's intervention provides another opportunity to recognise a simple but important principle in public representation:

When political office is used to open doors of opportunity for ordinary people, the impact can extend far beyond the beneficiaries themselves.

The real test, ultimately, will be how effectively the beneficiaries transform these interventions into sustainable livelihoods, businesses, employment and community prosperity.

Congratulations to the beneficiaries, and commendation to Hon. POLAM for the initiative.
