THE PARADOX OF PARDON: Can an Unforgiving Heart Demand Divine Mercy?

  

There is a familiar ritual in the corridors of power. When the curtain falls on a tenure, public servants and administrators often stand at the podium to deliver their valedictory speeches. In these parting words, a common refrain emerges: they turn their gaze upward, asking God for forgiveness for any wrongdoings committed in the discharge of their arduous duties. 

Recently, this familiar scene played out with the valedictory message of Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, who thoughtfully noted that he is going back to God for forgiveness, acknowledging that in the heat of administrative duties, he might have offended the Almighty. It is a humble, sobering admission. 

However, statements like this from powerful figures inevitably open the door to a much deeper, more psychological, and deeply philosophical question—one that transcends any single individual: 'Can a man who is notoriously unforgiving to his fellow humans genuinely obtain the forgiveness of God?'

The Psychology of the Clenched Fist

To understand forgiveness, we must first understand the ego. Psychologically, the refusal to forgive is often an exertion of power. When someone offends us, withholding our pardon becomes a way of maintaining moral superiority and control over them. For men and women in positions of high authority, this trait often hardens into a character flaw. They demand absolute loyalty, and when crossed, they lock their offenders in a mental and emotional prison, throwing away the key.

Yet, this creates a profound cognitive dissonance. How does a human being, cloaked in all their mortal frailties and imperfections, ruthlessly condemn their fellow man, yet expect a blank cheque of grace from the Creator? It is the height of human hubris to believe we can operate a strict ledger of vengeance on earth, while demanding a ledger of limitless mercy from Heaven.

The Biblical Verdict: The Unmerciful Servant

The Christian faith addresses this paradox with terrifying clarity. It does not treat forgiveness as a mere suggestion; it is a strict, conditional transaction. In the Lord’s Prayer, the condition for divine pardon is explicitly tied to human relations: 

"Forgive us our trespasses, AS we forgive those who trespass against us." To drive this home, Jesus Christ told the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:21-35). A king forgave a servant an unpayable, astronomical debt. Yet, the moment that servant walked free, he found a fellow worker who owed him a tiny fraction of that amount and violently choked him, refusing his pleas for mercy and throwing him into prison. When the king heard of this, his wrath was absolute. The unmerciful servant’s original debt was reinstated, and he was condemned. 

The spiritual mathematics of the Bible is simple: You cannot bypass the brother you have strangled on earth to shake hands with God in Heaven. 

The Quranic Standard: The Condition of Mercy

Islamic theology is equally resolute on this matter. The Quran beautifully intertwines the mercy of Allah with the mercy humans show to one another. During a deeply personal trial involving his own family, Abu Bakr (RA) swore never to help or forgive the relative involved. In response, Allah revealed a profound verse in Surah An-Nur (24:22):

"Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love for Allah to forgive you? Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) delivered a definitive, chilling verdict on the unforgiving heart in a famous Hadith: 

"He who does not show mercy to the people, Allah will not show mercy to him." (Sahih Muslim)

In Islam, 'Huquq al-Ibad' (the rights of fellow human beings) are so sacred that even Allah, in His infinite grace, often requires the wronged person to forgive the offender before Divine forgiveness is granted. You cannot beg God to overlook your mountainous administrative sins if you refuse to overlook the anthill of offenses committed by your subordinates or peers.

The Ultimate Truth

Valedictory speeches are noble, and returning to God in repentance is the ultimate duty of every mortal. However, true repentance is not a vertical line drawn straight to the sky; it is a cross. It requires the vertical relationship with God and the horizontal relationship with men.

If you have spent your tenure, your career, or your life ruling with an iron fist, nursing grudges, and ignoring the pleas of those you have crushed, Heaven's court is not a laundering machine for your conscience. You cannot use the name of God to beg for your own peace while shutting your ears when others begged you in that very same Name.

Before any man asks the Creator for a clean slate, he must first wipe clean the slates of those who owe him. Anything less is not repentance; it is simply public relations.
