ILORIN— The rich cultural heritage and academic pride of Igboho Kingdom were on full, glorious display on Thursday as the paramount ruler, His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr. Joel Olalere Olawuwo, the Alepata of Igboholand, led an unprecedented royal delegation to the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN). 
 



The revered monarch temporarily relocated his royal court to the Kwara State capital to honor one of Igboho's finest and most illustrious daughters, Professor Mariam Adepeju AbdulRaheem-Mustapha, as she delivered the university’s historic 305th Inaugural Lecture.
  
A Monarch in Dual Capacity: The Crown and The School Badge
While the presence of a paramount ruler at a university inaugural lecture is always a matter of high prestige, Oba Dr. Joel Olalere Olawuwo’s attendance carried a profound, dual significance that captivated the university community.

Sitting in the front row of the overflowing UNILORIN Main Auditorium, the monarch seamlessly embodied the dignity of the crown and the brotherly solidarity of the Irepo Grammar School Old Students Association (IGSIOSA). This dual representation served as a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of the school as a breeding ground for kings, scholars, and national leaders.

Royal Blessings for a Trailblazer
Professor Mariam AbdulRaheem-Mustapha’s achievement is a monumental point of pride for the Alepata and the entire Igboho Kingdom. Shattering multiple glass ceilings, she stands tall as the First Female Professor of Public Law, the First Female Head of the Department of Public Law, and the Second Female Professor in the history of the UNILORIN Faculty of Law.

During her emotionally charged and intellectually profound lecture titled, “Children in the Cage, Justice on Trial,” the erudite professor advocated for compassionate reforms in the juvenile justice system. Her powerful words—"A society that cages its children through neglect and then confines them through punishment places its own future in danger"—drew nods of royal approval from the Alepata, who is known for his deep commitment to youth development, peace, and the protection of the vulnerable in his kingdom.

The Convergence of Royalty, Religion, and State
The Alepata did not come alone. Showcasing the absolute unity of Igboholand, His Royal Majesty was accompanied by his esteemed high chiefs, who resplendently represented the traditional council. The spiritual backing of the community was also fully mobilized, with the Chief Imam of Igboholand and a distinguished League of Imams joining the royal entourage to offer prayers for the new professor.

Furthermore, the Alepata's dual capacity beautifully synchronized with the presence of other high-profile Igboho indigenes and IGSIOSA alumni, including the Acting Governor of Oyo State and IGSIOSA BoT Chairman, His Excellency, Chief Bayo Lawal, and the National President of the association, Mr. Femi Adeyanju.

A Message to the Next Generation
At the conclusion of the academic procession led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, the Alepata bestowed his royal and fatherly blessings upon Prof. Mariam. 

For the people of Igboho, the visual of their paramount ruler—a king and an old boy—traveling across state lines to celebrate a female professor of law, sends a resounding message to every young girl in the kingdom: Education is the ultimate equalizer, and excellence will always attract the crown.
