OYO 2027 SHOCKER: "I Won't Be A Godfather To My Successor!" — Seyi Makinde Drops Political Bombshell

Ayekooto Media

IBADAN— As the race for the 2027 general elections gathers momentum, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has firmly declared that he will not play the role of a political godfather who dictates the affairs of government to his successor.

The governor, who is currently serving his second and final term, stressed that his primary objective after completing his eight-year tenure is to ensure a seamless transition of power. He emphasized that his successor would be granted the absolute freedom required to provide leadership and implement policies without undue executive interference.

The Hijrah 1448 Declaration
Governor Makinde made this significant political statement on Monday, August 10, 2026, while hosting members of the Muslim community to a Hijrah 1448 luncheon at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Agodi, in Ibadan.

Addressing the stakeholders, Makinde laid out his political philosophy regarding life after office. “I won't be a political godfather to my successor," the governor stated. "After eight years of serving the people of Oyo State, I will ensure that there is a smooth transition and that whoever succeeds me is given the opportunity to develop and implement policies in line with the aspirations and yearnings of the people".

The Bimbo Adekanmbi Factor
The governor’s remarks come amidst growing political alignments in the state. Makinde specifically noted that he would not stand in the way of governance if Bimbo Adekanmbi, his preferred successor and the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), wins the 2027 election.

Adekanmbi, a prominent political figure in the state, had previously pledged to sustain and expand Governor Makinde's developmental legacies if elected to power.

Reiterating his stance on democratic freedom, Makinde added, “Leadership is about service, not control, so I will not stand in the way of my successor. My job is to hand over and let the people's mandate work".

A Call for Competence Over Sentiments
Beyond his succession plans, the governor used the occasion to issue a strong charge to the citizens of Oyo State. He urged the electorate, particularly the Muslim community in attendance, to evaluate all political aspirants based on competence, character, and their genuine commitment to public service.

He warned against the dangers of voting along the lines of ethnicity, religion, or other sectional interests, maintaining that "public office holders must put the interest of the people above personal or political interests".

As the 2027 electoral cycle approaches, Makinde’s anti-godfatherism stance sets a unique tone for the political landscape in Oyo State, challenging the traditional norms of succession politics in Nigeria.
