OBITUARY: Ibadanland Mourns as Veteran Journalist and Abese Olubadan, Oloye Lekan Alabi, Passes Away

  

Chief Lekan Alabi 

The city of Ibadan and the entire Nigerian media and cultural landscape have been thrown into deep mourning following the passing of a monumental icon, Oloye Lekan Alabi, the Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland. 

Oloye Alabi, a man who wore many distinguished hats, died leaving behind a sprawling legacy that brilliantly bridged the worlds of grassroots journalism, government public relations, literature, and Yoruba traditional chieftaincy. He was 76.

A Towering Career in Media and Public Service

Before his ascent within the revered Olubadan chieftaincy lines, Lekan Alabi carved out an impeccable reputation as a veteran Nigerian journalist. His command of language, deep respect for facts, and unparalleled understanding of the socio-political dynamics of the South-West made him a staple in Nigerian media. 

His competence caught the attention of the political elite, leading to an extraordinary public service record. Oloye Alabi achieved the rare feat of serving as the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to three successive Oyo State Governors. This unique achievement speaks volumes about the absolute trust, confidence, and non-partisan respect successive administrations placed in his professional capabilities. 

A Custodian of Yoruba Culture and History

Beyond the corridors of government, the late Abese Olubadan was a passionate historian and a published author. His literary works contributed immensely to the documentation and preservation of Yoruba history and culture. Recognizing his unyielding dedication to the traditions of his people, he was famously appointed as the First Cultural Ambassador of the National Museum, Ile-Ife. 

Throughout his life, he remained a fearless voice of truth. He was known for his candid historical reflections, including his notable interventions on Nigeria's democratic struggles and his insider accounts of the military era, which always captivated historians and political analysts alike.

A Bittersweet Moment for Ibadanland

His passing comes at a rare, emotional crossroads for the ancient city of Ibadan. Even as the community processes this monumental loss, the traditional institution is simultaneously preparing for the elevation of Oloye Akin Alabi. Currently the Aare Onibon of Ibadanland, Akin Alabi is set to be upgraded to the position of Gbonka Olubadan of Ibadanland. 

This juxtaposition of grief and celebration reflects how deeply woven the traditional institution remains in the daily life of Ibadanland. 

As tributes continue to pour in from across the globe, Oloye Lekan Alabi will be remembered not just as a chief, but as an illustrious son of the soil whose lifelong contributions touched governance, the press, and traditional life in equal, glorious measure. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
