MASSIVE BUST: Nigeria Customs Intercepts 140 Pump-Action Rifles and Cannabis Worth ₦373.8M at Tin Can Port

Lagos  Tin Can Port

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has delivered a crushing blow to transnational smuggling syndicates by intercepting a massive cache of firearms and illicit drugs at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, confirmed the seizure of 140 knocked-down pump-action rifles alongside millions of Naira worth of cannabis-infused edibles, signaling a major victory for national security.

Inside the High-Stakes Interception
The highly coordinated operation was the result of the Customs Service’s advanced intelligence-driven risk management system.

The primary target was a 20-foot container (marked TEMU 184536/9) that arrived at the Tin Can Port aboard the vessel 'MV Velika' on July 8, 2026. Flagged for enhanced scrutiny, Customs officers placed the consignment under strict surveillance.

Upon physical examination, officers uncovered carefully concealed crates containing components of JoJeff double-barrel pump-action rifles. As of the time of the briefing, 140 fully reassembled rifles had been counted, with inventories still ongoing to determine the final configuration.

The Cannabis-Infused Edibles Bust
In a separate but equally alarming operation, Customs officers intercepted two 40-foot containers loaded with illicit narcotics ingeniously hidden among legitimate imported goods such as used vehicles, batteries, and generators.

The seizure included a massive haul of highly potent drug edibles, specifically:
* 109 cartons of Delta-8 cannabis-infused pre-roll cookies.
* 125 cartons of Delta-8 cannabis-infused gummies.
* 73 cartons of standard cannabis-infused cookies.

The combined street value of the firearms and the narcotic edibles is estimated at a staggering ₦373.8 million.

Arrests and Ongoing Manhunt
The Comptroller-General revealed that the intelligence operation led to the arrest of a key suspect at a bonded terminal on July 31, 2026, while the individual was attempting to facilitate the illicit container's release.

Financial records and telecommunication data have already linked the suspect to the principal consignee. While two suspects are currently in custody providing vital information, a massive manhunt is underway for the principal importer who remains at large.
