BREAKING: Tinubu Appoints Osun-Born Abel Enitan as New Head of Civil Service

ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mr Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan as the new Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), with the appointment taking effect from August 27, 2026.

The Presidency announced the appointment on Wednesday, August 19, in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. The appointment has also been reported by several major Nigerian media organisations.

Enitan will succeed Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, who is due to retire from the Federal Civil Service after attaining the statutory retirement age of 60.

According to the Presidency, Enitan is the most senior Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service. He is currently the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education and has spent more than seven years as a Permanent Secretary.

Before his current posting, Enitan served in different capacities, including at the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Office of the Vice President.

His appointment places an experienced career civil servant at the head of Nigeria's Federal Civil Service at a time when the government is pursuing reforms aimed at improving professionalism, efficiency and service delivery across the public sector.

President Tinubu charged the incoming Head of Service to consolidate the reforms and innovations already underway in the Federal Civil Service while deepening professionalism and efficiency across Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

The President also urged Enitan to build a Civil Service that is professional, merit-driven, accountable, innovative and responsive to the needs and aspirations of Nigerians.

Tinubu Commends Walson-Jack

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing Head of Service, Mrs Walson-Jack, for what he described as her distinguished service to the nation.

The President commended the reforms, innovations and institutional impact recorded in the Civil Service during her tenure and wished her a fulfilling and successful life after retirement.

Walson-Jack became Head of the Civil Service of the Federation in August 2024, succeeding Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, who retired after attaining the statutory retirement age.

Enitan's Background

Enitan, who hails from Osun State, was born on December 12, 1966, according to the biographical details contained in the presidential announcement.

He had his secondary education at Ajibode Grammar School, Ibadan, and the College of Arts and Science, Ile-Ife, before proceeding to the University of Lagos, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Banking in 1988.

In 2015, he obtained a Master of Science degree in Public Policy Analysis from Nasarawa State University, Lafia.

With his extensive experience within the Federal Civil Service, the Presidency said Enitan brings considerable institutional knowledge and a deep understanding of the workings of government to the office.

His assumption of office on August 27 will therefore mark another transition in the leadership of Nigeria's Federal Civil Service, as the Tinubu administration seeks to strengthen the machinery of government and advance its Renewed Hope Agenda.

The appointment takes effect on August 27, 2026.
