There comes a time in the life of any progressive community when it must pause, look inward, and give flowers to its true heroes while they can still smell them. For too long, our society has been quick to amplify mediocrity while our brightest minds quietly change the world. Today, however, we must rewrite that narrative. 

Today, the prestigious University College Hospital (UCH) and the University of Ibadan stand still in profound reverence as an accomplished medical colossus, Professor Olayiwola Babatunde Shittu, bows out of active service at the glorious age of 77. 

But for us in Oke-Ogun, this is not just a University of Ibadan celebration. This is a monumental victory for Igboho. 

Deep Roots: The Pride of Isale Bonni
Before he became a globally recognized Professor of Medicine, Surgery, and Urology, he was a son of the soil. Born into the esteemed Ile Imam, Isale Bonni in Igboho, Professor Shittu is the proud grandson of Imam Mustapha. He carries with him the dignified, intellectual, and resilient spirit of his ancestry. 
  


His rise to the pinnacle of the medical profession is a powerful reminder that greatness can emerge from our roots. He did not just carry the name of his family to the global stage; he carried the entire Igboho community into the annals of medical history. 

A Trailblazer in Nigerian Medicine
Professor Shittu’s career is decorated with epoch-making research and surgical milestones that have saved countless lives. His expertise in urology and surgical oncology has made him a highly sought-after name across Nigeria, Germany, and the United States. 

Perhaps his most legendary contribution to Nigerian medical history is his pioneering role in the theater room. Professor Shittu stands tall in the records as a pioneering figure in the team that performed the first Kidney Transplant at UCH, Ibadan. To be at the forefront of such a complex, life-saving frontier in a resource-limited country takes an uncommon level of genius, dedication, and precision. 

Doing Away with Parochialism: A Lesson for Igboho
As we celebrate this illustrious son, we must also reflect on a deeper societal truth. How are we so incredibly blessed in Igboho with such uncommon intellectuals, yet we often allow the noise of parochialism, religious bigotry, and political division to blind us? 

A man who has spent decades saving lives, researching prostate cancer, and performing groundbreaking surgeries does not belong to one religious faction or political camp—he is a generational gift to humanity. It is my fervent prayer that Igboho will continue to awaken to this reality. We must learn to consciously appreciate our leaders, elders, and intellectual giants, firmly doing away with the petty divisions that hold our community back.

Happy Retirement to a Living Legend
To Professor Olayiwola Babatunde Shittu: As you drop the scalpel and step away from the grueling hours of active service, the entire Igboho community—and indeed the Nigerian medical fraternity—rises to give you a standing ovation. 

You have run a phenomenal race. You have healed the sick, mentored the next generation of surgeons, and etched the name of Ile Imam, Isale Bonni in gold. We wish you a peaceful, joyous, and incredibly healthy retirement. May the fruits of your decades of labor continue to be a source of joy to you and your family.
