ABUJA— In a solemn move to honour the ultimate sacrifices made during the recent Oriire/Ogbomoso school abduction crisis, the Nigerian Senate has officially approved a ₦50 million financial support package for the families of the slain victims.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced the intervention during Wednesday's plenary session, stating that the funds are a token of national appreciation and grief for the families left behind.

#Breakdown of the Compensation

The ₦50 million package will be distributed equally among the families of the five individuals who tragically lost their lives during the 56-day hostage ordeal and the subsequent rescue operations. Each bereaved family is set to receive ₦10 million to assist with the upkeep of their dependents.

The beneficiaries include:

The families of the two teachers who were brutally murdered by the terrorists while in captivity.

The families of three security operatives (including military personnel and a police officer) who fell in the line of duty during the intense multi-agency rescue mission that successfully freed the 44 surviving schoolchildren and teachers.

Commendation for the Rescue Mission

While announcing the donation, the Senate President commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian Armed Forces for their unwavering commitment to securing the release of the victims. He described the deaths of the teachers and security personnel as a "painful sacrifice in the nation’s fight against insecurity."

"The successful rescue has restored hope and confidence among Nigerians, particularly parents and school communities," a Senate resolution noted. "We are extending this token of ₦50 million to augment the upkeep of the children and dependents left behind by the deceased."

A Call for Holistic Compensation

During the session, some lawmakers, including Senator Abdul Ningi, raised points of order urging the Federal Government to ensure that compensation for victims of terrorist attacks is holistic and extended to all affected citizens across the country without discrimination.

The Senate further urged relevant emergency and health authorities to provide the highest standard of ongoing medical and psychological care to the rescued students and teachers, who are currently undergoing rehabilitation in Ogbomoso under the supervision of the Oyo State Government.
