Relief for Parents: FG Suspends Controversial WAEC and NECO Registration Fee Hike

Millions of parents, guardians, and educational stakeholders across Nigeria can finally breathe a massive sigh of relief following the Federal Government’s directive to suspend the highly controversial hike in secondary school council examination fees.


The Ministry of Education had initially proposed a policy change that would have seen the registration fees for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) skyrocket from the current ₦27,500 to a staggering ₦50,000 per student. 


The announcement of the proposed hike had triggered widespread outrage across the federation, with labor unions, civil society organizations, and parent-teacher associations condemning the timing as insensitive, given the prevailing economic headwinds.


Bowing to public pressure, the Presidency intervened this morning, ordering an immediate halt to the implementation. The government stated that while infrastructural upgrades for the examination bodies are necessary, it remains deeply committed to preventing policies that increase the financial burden on vulnerable Nigerian households. For now, registration fees remain anchored at their original rates, preserving the academic hopes of countless students nationwide.
