In the intricate theater of Oyo State politics, leadership is rarely handed to those who simply desire it; it is earned by those who have stood in the trenches with the people. Today, under our exclusive 'Oyo State: Know Your Governor' column, we present a remarkable individual whose voice has resonated not just on the airwaves, but in the hearts of countless Nigerians: Alhaji Oriyomi Abdulrahman Hamzat. 

 

Alhaji Oriyomi Okikiola Hamza 

An icon of modern broadcasting, a tireless advocate for justice, a compassionate humanitarian, and now, the Gubernatorial Candidate for the Accord Party in Oyo State. 

Roots, Upbringing, and Academic Excellence

Born in the early 1980s in Ibadan, Oriyomi Hamzat is a proud native of Sagba village in the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. Broadcasting and a deep sense of justice run in his blood. He is the son of the late Alhaji Asimiyu Adekunle Hamzat, a highly respected journalist with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) who was known for holding those in power accountable. 

 

Building on this solid foundation, Oriyomi embarked on a rigorous academic journey. He attended Iroko Community Grammar School before proceeding to the prestigious Oyo State School of Science, Pade. A man of diverse intellect, he first earned a National Diploma (ND) in Geology from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, before his passion for media led him to study Mass Communication at the institution’s Eruwa Campus. 

His thirst for knowledge did not stop there. In 2023, he bagged a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics and Language Arts from the University of Ibadan (UI). Today, he had his Master's degree in Peace Building and Conflict Resolution at the same premier university, arming himself with the intellectual tools required to govern a complex state like Oyo.

The Media Mogul and Voice of the Voiceless

From the outset, Oriyomi Hamzat showed an unwavering commitment to transparency and integrity. He cut his teeth as a print journalist for 'The Guardian' newspapers, before dominating the airwaves across esteemed institutions such as the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Raypower, and 32 FM.

However, his crowning achievement in the media space is the founding of Agidigbo 88.7 FM in Ibadan. Commissioned in March 2021, Agidigbo FM quickly became an emblem of free speech and courageous reporting, amplifying the concerns of ordinary citizens and fearlessly scrutinizing power. As the Chairman of Sure Etiquette Media Plus Ltd in Nigeria and Sure Etiquette Plus in the United Kingdom, he launched an indigenous radio station in the UK in 2024 and is currently finalizing the highly anticipated Agidigbo FM, Lagos. 

The Crucible of Fire: Trials and Triumphs

True leaders are forged in the fires of adversity. In 2017, Oriyomi encountered a severe political and personal challenge. Under the administration of the late Governor Senator Abiola Ajimobi, he was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) and remanded in Agodi prison over trumped-up allegations surrounding the death of a foster child. 

However, truth always outlasts tyranny. Evidence soon emerged proving his absolute innocence, revealing that his arrest was a politically motivated witch-hunt designed to silence his fierce investigative journalism. He emerged from this crucible not with bitterness, but with a renewed, unshakable commitment to fighting for the oppressed.

Philanthropy and The MAFA Initiative

Beyond the microphone, Alhaji Hamzat is a beacon of hope for the less privileged. Through the 'Oriyomi Hamzat Charity Foundation'  and his groundbreaking 'Make a Future Alive (MAFA)' initiative, he provides housing, education, feeding, and mentorship to orphans and disadvantaged youths. 

His philanthropy is not a seasonal political gimmick; it is a lifestyle. He is known for fiercely taking up cases that others dare not touch—most notably his relentless, nationwide fight for justice over the tragic death of Timothy Adegoke, bringing solace to a grieving family. His efforts have earned him a global ambassadorial role, an International Humanitarian Service Award, and an Honorary Doctorate in Art and Communications.

The Political Pivot: The Accord Party Mandate

Today, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat has transitioned from being the "Voice of the Voiceless" in the studios to seeking the ultimate executive mandate to physically transform the lives of the Oyo State masses. 

Flying the flag of the Accord Party, his gubernatorial candidacy represents a paradigm shift. He is stepping into the race not as a typical career politician, but as a man who understands the streets, feels the pulse of the grassroots, and has a documented history of using his personal resources to build humanity. 

As we present Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat to the good people of Oyo State, we recognize a man whose legacy of service, exemplary leadership, and unshakable integrity speak volumes. The Accord Party has presented not just a candidate, but a movement. The masses now have a man who truly knows them, fighting for the chance to govern them.
