A Slap on the Wrist for Terror: Why the DSS is Right to Demand the Ultimate Penalty for Ansaru Commanders

The scales of justice are meant to balance the gravity of a crime with the weight of its punishment. But what happens when the crime involves the cold-blooded beheading of innocent educators, and the punishment is a guaranteed bed and three square meals a day at the expense of the state?

The recent revelation by the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding the prosecution of two senior Ansaru terrorist commanders—Mahmud Usman and Abubakar Abba—has opened a deep wound in the national conscience. On Monday, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja handed the two men life imprisonment after they suddenly pleaded guilty to all 32 counts of terrorism. 

To the untrained eye, life behind bars might seem like a victory for the state. But for the DSS, and indeed for the grieving families of the teachers murdered during the 56-day Oriire school abduction saga, it is nothing short of a judicial slap on the wrist.

The Leverage of Blood

To understand the DSS’s outrage, we must look at the timeline and the macabre games played by these terrorists. 

For nearly two months, foot soldiers of the Ansaru terror group held innocent schoolchildren and teachers from Oyo State in captivity. Their primary demand was not just money; it was the unconditional release of Usman and Abba. To prove they were deadly serious, the terrorists beheaded two teachers—using the blood of innocent civil servants to pressure the federal government. 

During this horrific 60-day standoff, the commanders in DSS custody played legal games. They initially pleaded "not guilty." Then, they told the judge they were "undecided." They were stalling, waiting to see if their foot soldiers' bloody blackmail would work. It was only after the Nigerian military and allied security forces executed a flawless, multi-agency rescue operation that brought the remaining captives home—shattering the terrorists' leverage—that these commanders conveniently decided to plead guilty.

The Limits of Life Imprisonment

The DSS is right to approach the Court of Appeal to seek a stiffer sentence, which in cases of terrorism resulting in death, should undoubtedly be capital punishment. 

When a terrorist's very existence in a jail cell inspires their followers to kidnap and butcher innocent people on the outside, keeping them alive becomes a continuous national security threat. We cannot afford a legal precedent where masterminds can orchestrate the beheading of citizens, stall the courts, and then use a "guilty" plea as a shield to secure life imprisonment when their blackmail fails. 

The brutalized families of the Oriire teachers are left to navigate a lifetime of trauma and loss. It is a grave injustice to tell them that the men whose freedom their loved ones were slaughtered for get to keep their lives.

If Nigeria is to draw a line in the sand against the creeping expansion of terrorism into the South-West, the justice system must speak a language that terrorists understand.
