IBADAN — Oyo State has been thrown into mourning following the death of former Secretary to the Oyo State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abdul Waheed Akintola Olajide, a respected public servant and political figure who served during the administration of the late former Governor Abiola Ajimobi.
Olajide reportedly died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, with his family formally announcing his passing on Wednesday.
In a statement announcing the death, the family described him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and cousin, while expressing gratitude to Almighty Allah for a life they described as well lived.
The family also appealed to relatives, friends, associates and members of the public to remember the deceased and the family in their prayers.
Former Ajimobi SSG Dies
Olajide served as Secretary to the Oyo State Government during the administration of the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi, who governed the state from 2011 to 2019.
His tenure placed him at the centre of the state’s administration during a significant period in Oyo's political history.
He was widely known within Oyo's political and professional circles as an administrator and chartered accountant, and his passing has already generated tributes from political leaders and public figures across the state.
Oyo Government Reacts
The Oyo State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former SSG.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Acting Governor, Barrister Abdulraheem Adebayo Lawal, described Olajide's death as shocking and painful.
Lawal reportedly described the deceased as a patriotic and dedicated leader who made significant contributions to the development of Oyo State during his years in public service.
The Acting Governor also extended condolences to the Olajide family and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Senator Alli Pays Tribute
The death has also drawn a strong reaction from Senator Sharafadeen Alli, the Oyo State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Alli described Olajide as an accomplished administrator, distinguished professional and patriotic Oyo indigene whose contributions to the state would remain indelible.
According to Alli, the late former SSG was a rare breed of public servant whose experience, wisdom and commitment contributed significantly to governance and institutional development in Oyo State.
He described the death as a monumental loss to the deceased's family, the political class, the professional community and the people of Oyo State.
Janazah Prayer Held in Ibadan
The family announced that the Janazah prayer for the deceased was scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, at the MAN Centre, Oke Ado, Ibadan.
Reports published later Wednesday indicate that the burial was subsequently carried out in Ibadan in accordance with Islamic rites.
A Life of Public Service
Beyond his position as SSG, Olajide was recognised as a professional and public administrator.
Reports describe him as an Ibadan-born chartered accountant and alumnus of the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Ibadan.
He was also involved in Muslim leadership, education and public affairs, maintaining a presence in Oyo's political and community life beyond his time in government.
His death comes several years after that of his former principal, Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who died in June 2020.
Oyo Loses Another Experienced Political Voice
The passing of Olajide represents the loss of another experienced figure from the political generation that shaped Oyo State's governance during the Ajimobi years.
For many who worked with him or encountered him in public life, his legacy will be remembered through his years of service, professional career and contributions to the administration of Oyo State.
As condolences continue to pour in, family members, political associates, professional colleagues and well-wishers are expected to continue paying tribute to the former SSG.
Ayekooto Media NG extends its condolences to the Olajide family, his associates and the people of Oyo State.
May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus.
