BREAKING NEWS.  ABUJA — Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji, the Nigerian Army officer accused of masterminding the thwarted plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, has publicly defended his actions. Breaking his silence, the embattled colonel claimed that the aborted coup was driven purely by patriotism and deep concern over Nigeria's deteriorating socio-economic conditions, rather than any selfish political ambition.

The Motivation Behind the Mutiny
Speaking on the allegations leveled against him and his co-conspirators, Ma'aji maintained a defiant stance. He painted the picture of a military intervention born out of necessity, pointing to the severe hardships and structural decay plaguing the nation. According to him, the plot was an attempt to salvage the country from imminent collapse, insisting that personal power was never the ultimate goal.

However, the federal government and military intelligence present a much darker narrative regarding the colonel's true intentions.

Anatomy of the Thwarted Overthrow
The conspiracy, which sent shockwaves through the nation's democratic structures, was first uncovered by Nigerian military intelligence in late September 2025 and subsequently leaked to the public.

Military records indicate that the treasonous plot was masterminded by Col. Mohammed Ma'aji and operationally led by Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq. The organizers, who were allegedly officers of northern extraction, had laid out a violent blueprint for regime change. According to intelligence reports, the plotters scheduled the violent overthrow for October 25, 2025. Their chilling strategy included the planned assassination of President Tinubu alongside several high-ranking government officials.

The financial logistics for the aborted coup have also drawn massive controversy. Investigators alleged that the plot received financial backing from Timipre Sylva, a former governor and petroleum minister.

The Fallout and Military Purge
The exposure of the plot led to swift and severe countermeasures by the Tinubu administration.
The traditional Independence Day military parade scheduled for October 1, 2025, was abruptly cancelled.
The Defence Intelligence Agency apprehended sixteen military officers linked to the plot.
The arrested personnel included a brigadier general, a colonel, four lieutenant colonels, five majors, two captains, a naval lieutenant commander, and an air force squadron leader.

Though the military initially attempted to downplay the mass arrests as routine disciplinary actions, the gravity of the treason soon became undeniable. In the aftermath, President Tinubu executed a sweeping overhaul of the military's top brass. On October 18, 2025, he replaced the military service chiefs and promoted General Olufemi Oluyede to the position of Chief of Defence Staff.

As investigations remain ongoing, Col. Ma'aji's recent claims of "patriotism" add a complex psychological layer to what remains one of the most severe threats to Nigeria's Fourth Republic. Whether his defense will hold weight in a military tribunal remains to be seen.
