BREAKING: President Tinubu Orders EFCC to Immediately Unfreeze Osun State Accounts Ahead of Elections

In a major political and administrative development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately vacate the court order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government. 

The presidential intervention comes just hours after the anti-graft agency restricted access to the state's financial reserves, citing an ongoing investigation into alleged financial infractions. 

The Genesis of the Financial Embargo
On August 5, the EFCC secured an order to freeze the state's accounts based on allegations surrounding the mismanagement of an ₦11 billion fund, which included Ecology and Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursements. The commission reported noticing a pattern of suspicious automated transfers that commenced early in the week.

The freeze sparked immediate outrage from the Osun State Government. Governor Ademola Adeleke fiercely contested the move, describing it as an unconstitutional overreach and an attempt to ground the state’s administrative machinery.

President Tinubu’s Democratic Intervention
Recognizing the sensitive timing of the EFCC’s action, President Tinubu stepped in to de-escalate the tension. With the highly anticipated Osun Gubernatorial Election scheduled for August 15, the President emphasized that crippling a state's financial capacity days before a major election is inauspicious.

Sources within the Presidency noted that the directive to unfreeze the accounts is not an exoneration of any alleged financial crime, but a necessary step to ensure that public confidence in the democratic process remains unshaken.

Civil Servants and Logistics: The unfreezing of the accounts ensures that state workers and election logistics contractors can be mobilized without delay.
