IBADAN — The internal crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State has deepened, with rival camps laying competing claims to the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 election.

The latest development has placed the camps of Chief Taofeek Adegboyega Adegoke and Dr Gbemileke Alagbe at the centre of an increasingly contentious political and legal battle over who should be recognised as the authentic ADC governorship candidate in the state.

Adegoke’s media team has strongly rejected claims from the Alagbe camp, insisting that its principal remains the authentic flagbearer of the party and the rightful candidate for the 2027 Oyo State governorship election.

Adegoke Camp Insists on Victory

According to a statement attributed to Adegoke’s media team, Adegoke emerged from an ADC governorship primary in which he reportedly secured 16,051 votes.

The team said the result placed Adegoke ahead of other aspirants, including Chief Bisi Ilaka, who reportedly scored 11,415 votes, while Alagbe was credited with 241 votes. Other aspirants were also listed with lower scores.

The Adegoke camp has therefore urged ADC members, the media and members of the public to disregard what it described as misleading claims concerning the party’s governorship ticket.

The camp also questioned the legal and political basis of rival claims over the ticket, arguing that Adegoke’s emergence followed a recognised primary process.

Alagbe Camp Maintains Its Own Claim

The controversy, however, is far from over.

Earlier reports had announced Gbemileke Alagbe as the ADC governorship candidate in Oyo State following another primary exercise conducted by a faction of the party.

Alagbe has maintained that he is the authentic and duly recognised candidate of the ADC in the state, setting the stage for a potentially prolonged dispute over the party’s 2027 ticket.

The existence of competing claims has already generated concerns about the impact of the internal disagreement on the ADC’s preparations for the 2027 election.

Parallel Primaries Fuel Dispute

The latest crisis is linked to the conduct of parallel governorship primary exercises within the Oyo ADC structure.

Reports had previously indicated that separate primary exercises produced rival candidates, creating uncertainty over which candidate would ultimately receive the party’s official backing for the election.

The development has also introduced a legal dimension to the dispute, as rival camps seek to establish the legitimacy of their respective claims.

With the 2027 election approaching, the ADC leadership faces the difficult task of resolving the disagreement and presenting a unified candidate and campaign structure in Oyo State.
