BREAKING: Normalcy Restored After Fire Outbreak at Lagos Airport Terminal 2; FAAN Confirms Zero Casualties

LAGOS, NIGERIA — Panic temporarily gripped travelers and airport staff on Sunday, August 2, 2026, when a fire outbreak was reported at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos State. 


However, disaster was swiftly averted thanks to the rapid deployment of emergency protocols by aviation authorities, allowing normal flight operations to resume shortly after.


The Incident and Emergency Response

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the incident through an official statement, assuring the general public and international stakeholders that the situation was firmly under control.


According to the aviation authority, the fire affected a section of the bustling international terminal. Immediately after the alarm was raised, FAAN’s Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) was deployed to the scene. The highly trained emergency responders worked diligently and aggressively to contain the inferno, preventing it from spreading to critical airport infrastructure or disrupting the broader terminal network.


Zero Casualties Recorded

In what has been described as a highly coordinated evacuation and safety effort, emergency personnel were promptly mobilized to safeguard all passengers, airline staff, and visitors within the terminal area. 


“The FAAN Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) is currently responding to the incident and working diligently to contain the situation," the official statement read in part. FAAN management provided a massive sigh of relief to the nation by officially confirming that no casualties, injuries, or losses of life were recorded during the incident. 


Operations Back on Track

While the immediate cause of the fire and the full extent of the structural damage are still under formal investigation, the rapid containment allowed MMIA Terminal 2—which handles a significant volume of daily passenger traffic and international carrier operations—to bounce back swiftly. 


Normal operations have since resumed at the facility. FAAN has noted that further detailed updates regarding the root cause of the fire and any minor impacts on specific flight schedules will be communicated to the public once detailed assessments by response teams on the ground are concluded. 


Travelers are advised to proceed with their scheduled flights while cooperating with airport security and safety personnel.
