IBADAN — The 2027 presidential ambition of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has taken a major step forward following the emergence of Ibrahim Adamu Bala as his running mate on the platform of the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM).

Makinde, who formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election in May, emerged as the APM presidential candidate following the party’s nomination process and subsequently accepted the party’s presidential ticket in Ibadan.

Reports published in July indicate that Bala, 51, from Bauchi State, was listed as Makinde’s vice-presidential candidate on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) candidate nomination portal.

The development effectively gives the APM presidential ticket a South-North configuration, with Makinde representing Oyo State in the South-West and Bala representing Bauchi State in the North-East.

Makinde’s Opposition Coalition Push

The emergence of the ticket comes against the backdrop of Makinde’s repeated calls for opposition parties and political forces to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections.

At the May 14 declaration of his presidential ambition in Ibadan, Makinde argued that the opposition could provide a credible alternative to the ruling administration if political forces were prepared to work together.

He also described the opposition as extending beyond political parties to Nigerians seeking a different direction for the country.

The APM presidential candidate has subsequently presented his political project as an attempt to provide what he describes as a credible alternative, with issues including insecurity, unemployment, hunger, transportation and the rising cost of living featuring prominently in his campaign message.

APM Presidential Ticket Takes Shape

The selection of Bala marks another significant stage in the APM’s preparations for the 2027 presidential election.

The party has positioned Makinde as its principal candidate while seeking to expand its political reach beyond the South-West through a broader national coalition.

The APM has also indicated that its political strategy will involve working with opposition forces and political structures across the country ahead of the election.

Important Clarification on the Lawal Daura Claim

However, Ayekooto Media’s verification of the claim that Makinde has selected former State Security Service (SSS) Director-General, Lawal Musa Daura, as his running mate found no credible evidence supporting the assertion.

Available reports identifying Makinde’s running mate name Ibrahim Adamu Bala, not Lawal Daura.

Consequently, reports circulating that Daura has been selected for the position should, at this stage, be treated as unverified and should not be presented as an official development.

The confirmed development is that Makinde is the APM’s 2027 presidential candidate and Ibrahim Adamu Bala has been identified as his running mate.

With the presidential ticket now taking shape, attention is expected to shift toward how far the Makinde-led opposition project can expand its coalition and translate its political realignment into a formidable nationwide challenge in the 2027 presidential contest.

For the APM, the task ahead will be to transform the momentum surrounding its presidential ticket into a nationwide political structure capable of competing effectively across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
