BREAKING: Gunfire Erupts in Osogbo as Hoodlums Attack Adeleke’s Convoy at Ataoja Palace

OSOGBO — Tension gripped Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Wednesday after suspected hoodlums reportedly attacked the convoy of Governor Ademola Adeleke shortly after his visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji.

The incident reportedly triggered an exchange of gunfire between the suspected attackers and security personnel attached to the governor’s convoy, sending residents, traders and visitors in the area scrambling for safety.

The incident occurred shortly after Adeleke visited the traditional ruler following his receipt of the Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), confirming his victory in the August 15 governorship election.

Reports indicate that Adeleke arrived at the Ataoja’s palace at about 3:15 p.m. in a motorcade of roughly 20 vehicles after leaving the Osun State headquarters of INEC in Osogbo.

During the visit, the governor reportedly presented his Certificate of Return to the monarch, who prayed for the governor and his administration.

However, as the meeting was winding down, heavy gunshots reportedly erupted around the palace.

An eyewitness quoted in reports said Adeleke had already left the palace hall and entered the vehicle conveying him and some of his close aides when the shooting began.

The suspected attackers were reportedly travelling in an unregistered Sienna Space Bus and allegedly approached the area through the Ita Olokan axis of Osogbo.

The ensuing exchange of gunfire reportedly lasted between 12 and 15 minutes before the suspected attackers fled the area.

The Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, confirmed that the governor’s convoy came under attack, describing the attackers as hoodlums.

According to Alimi, security personnel attached to the governor successfully repelled the attackers.

“They are hoodlums, and the governor’s security repelled them. They attacked the governor’s convoy at Ataoja’s palace. No casualty,” the commissioner was quoted as saying.

The gunfire reportedly caused panic around the palace and adjoining areas, with some traders said to have hurriedly closed their shops while residents ran to safer locations.

Some reports further alleged that the attackers damaged part of the palace gate and later engaged security personnel around the Osogbo Central Mosque before fleeing towards the Ita Olokan area along the Osogbo-Ilesa Road. These details, however, have not been independently confirmed by the police.

The spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, was reported to have said he had yet to receive full details of the incident, promising that the command would issue further information after establishing the facts.

As of the time of filing this report, no death or injury had been officially confirmed in connection with the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the identity and motive of the suspected attackers, remained unclear as authorities continued efforts to establish what transpired.

The incident has nevertheless raised fresh concerns about security in Osun State, coming only four days after Adeleke was declared winner of the state’s governorship election.
