THE UNVARNISHED REALITY: Nigeria Ranks Number One Globally in Unvaccinated "Zero-Dose" Children as Crisis Hits Sokoto

SOKOTO — The stark, unvarnished reality of Nigeria's collapsing primary healthcare infrastructure was laid bare this week following a deeply alarming report confirming that Nigeria currently carries the highest number of "zero-dose" children globally.


Zero-dose children are those who have never received a single shot of routine, life-saving vaccines. 


The data was unveiled by health facilitators during a workshop organized by a coalition of government agencies and the Gavi Foundation in Sokoto State. The baseline findings revealed that Sokoto is one of the nation's worst-hit epicenters. Across just 13 local government areas in the state, an estimated 585,635 children under the age of five have not received any routine immunization. 


The Sokoto State government, alongside development partners, has now launched an emergency intervention targeting an 80% reduction in these figures between July 2026 and December 2027. 


For a country boasting of economic giants and vast resources, leading the world in unprotected children is a grim reminder that political grandstanding means nothing if the most vulnerable citizens are left entirely exposed to preventable diseases.
