SECURITY CRACKDOWN: Oyo Govt Demolishes Ojoo Shanties Used as Weapon Hideouts After Deadly Clashes

IBADAN — In a decisive move to restore public order and flush out criminal elements, the Oyo State Government has commenced the demolition of makeshift wooden and metal shanties in the Ojoo area of Akinyele Local Government Area.

The aggressive clearing exercise was launched following credible allegations by residents and stakeholders that the unauthorized structures had been converted into safe havens for hoodlums and storage points for dangerous weapons.

The government's directive comes in the immediate aftermath of the violent clashes that rocked the Ojoo axis on July 7 and 8. The unfortunate unrest, which heightened security concerns across the state capital, resulted in the tragic loss of two lives.

The final decision to bring down the structures was cemented during an on-the-spot assessment visit led by the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Chief Bayo Lawal. Accompanied by top government officials and security agencies, the Deputy Governor engaged with affected community members and stakeholders, who lamented that the shanties were facilitating illicit activities and the concealment of arms.

Acting swiftly on the Deputy Governor’s directive, a joint security team was deployed to supervise the demolition exercise, ensuring a thorough sweep of the area to curb further criminality.

Speaking on the development, the Executive Chairman of Akinyele Local Government, Hon. Akinwole Akinleye, affirmed that the demolition is a necessary, proactive measure. He stated that the exercise is heavily geared toward forestalling any recurrence of the recent deadly violence and is part of a broader strategy to significantly improve the security architecture within the council area.
