"GOD ANSWERED OUR PRAYERS": Tinubu Attributes Zero ASUU Strikes to Divine Intervention and Policy Shifts

ABUJA, NIGERIA— President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confidently declared that the absence of industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) since he assumed office is a direct result of answered prayers and his administration's proactive engagement with educational stakeholders.


Speaking on the stability currently being enjoyed across federal and state universities, the President highlighted the uninterrupted academic calendar as one of the silent but monumental achievements of his government, noting that the days of students languishing at home due to endless strikes are firmly in the past.


The Presidential Declaration

For decades, the Nigerian university system has been plagued by a cyclic crisis between the Federal Government and university lecturers, often resulting in prolonged strikes that derail the academic pursuits of millions of students. 


However, President Tinubu noted that his administration took deliberate steps to break this jinx. 


"We prayed for a stable educational system, and God answered our prayers. Since we took over the mantle of governance, there has been no ASUU strike. Our universities are open, our children are learning, and the academic calendar is finally predictable," the President was quoted as saying. 


Policy Beyond Prayers

While acknowledging divine intervention, the Presidency also pointed to the deliberate administrative machineries put in place to ensure industrial harmony. The administration has relied heavily on:

The Student Loan Act: Providing financial buffers for students to access higher education without the crushing burden of immediate tuition fees.

Open Door Dialogue: Maintaining consistent communication with ASUU leadership to address grievances before they escalate into full-blown industrial disputes.

Salary Resolutions: The strategic release of previously withheld salaries and the gradual implementation of revitalized funding for tertiary institutions.


The Unvarnished Reality

While the President's claims of an uninterrupted academic calendar since his inauguration remain factually accurate, the Ayekooto Media desk notes that the peace between the Federal Government and ASUU remains highly delicate. 


University lecturers have continued to issue intermittent warnings regarding the full implementation of their renegotiated agreements, poor remuneration amidst current economic realities, and infrastructural deficits in public institutions. 


Nevertheless, for the Nigerian student and the everyday parent, the current reality of a strike-free academic environment is indeed a welcome relief and a prayer answered. The true test of this administration, however, will be its ability to transition this temporary peace into permanent, institutionalized stability before the 2027 election cycle.
