From the Courtroom to the Shrine: American Attorney Completes 25-Year Journey to Become a Certified Babaláwo

In an era where the internet has commercialized spirituality and birthed a generation of self-proclaimed overnight gurus, the true essence of traditional priesthood remains a grueling test of character, discipline, and decades of study. 


This weekend, the global Isese community celebrated a monumental milestone as Oluwo Nla IrawoIfa, a native of Los Angeles, California, completed his Final Rights graduation to become a certified, graduate-level Babaláwo. The historic culmination comes after more than 25 years of unrelenting dedication to the study and service of Ifá. 


What makes Oluwo Nla IrawoIfa’s journey particularly compelling is his formidable intellectual and professional pedigree. Far from the archaic stereotypes often weaponized against traditional African spirituality, he represents a modern synthesis of global intellect and ancient wisdom. A graduate of the prestigious Loyola Marymount Law School, he is a practicing attorney, a high school educator, a devoted husband, and a proud father of four. His transition from the diaspora-rooted Santeria to graduating in the orthodox Nigerian Isese Tradition speaks volumes about his quest for spiritual authenticity and original roots.


His grueling academic and spiritual training was closely supervised by one of the most revered figures in traditional Yoruba religion, Dr. Oloye Solagbade Popoola, the former International President of the International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR). Dr. Popoola has been highly instrumental in exporting and standardizing the ethical, philosophical, and liturgical aspects of Isese in the United States. 


A glowing tribute shared by one of his mentees, Ifayomi, beautifully captured the essence of the moment: "In Ifá, a Babaláwo is traditionally a highly respected member of society who has undergone years of rigorous study, testing, discipline, and personal development before being entrusted with spiritual leadership... only a select few earn that honor through knowledge, character, sacrifice, and proven dedication."
