2027 PRESIDENCY: Is Abuja Jittery Over Seyi Makinde’s Growing National Profile?

The chessboard for the 2027 Presidential Election is already being fiercely contested, and the latest target in the crosshairs of the Presidency appears to be the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde. 


While the election is still a year away, the political maneuvering has reached a fever pitch. Recent preemptive verbal salvos from the presidency's camp have sparked intense reactions from political observers, suggesting that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is growing increasingly uncomfortable with Makinde’s rising national profile.


The Proxy War Begins

The friction became undeniable following Makinde’s recent bold call for the United Nations (UN) to intervene in the localized security crises ravaging parts of the country. This statement, seen by many as a direct indictment of the Federal Government's failure to secure the nation, drew the immediate ire of Abuja loyalists. Prominent APC stalwarts, including Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, launched scathing attacks against the governor, attempting to publicly downplay his political weight and intellect.


However, political stakeholders are reading between the lines. Groups like the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and various youth coalitions have fired back at the Presidency, interpreting these attacks as a clear sign of panic.


Why Makinde?

Governor Makinde has masterfully positioned himself as the stabilizing force of the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Having broken away from the Atiku Abubakar faction during the 2023 elections through the G-5 alliance, Makinde is now viewed by many Southern and Middle-Belt power brokers as a clean, highly intellectual, and viable alternative for the top job.


His infrastructural achievements in Oyo State, coupled with his independent, non-combative yet firm political posture, have earned him admirers across party lines. 


The question on the lips of every political analyst today is this: Will Seyi Makinde formally throw his hat into the 2027 ring to challenge the incumbent, or is the ruling APC simply shadow-boxing an unseen opponent? One thing is certain—the battleline between the Agodi Government House and Aso Rock is slowly but surely being drawn.
