BREAKING: Tragedy Averted as Enugu Air Plane Crash-Lands at Benin Airport, Passengers Evacuated Safely

BENIN CITY, EDO STATE— A major national tragedy was averted on Thursday afternoon after an Enugu Air commercial aircraft skidded off the runway upon landing at the Benin City Airport in Edo State.


The incident, officially described by aviation authorities as a "runway excursion," involved an Embraer E170 regional jet (Registration Number: 5N-ENR) operating Flight 4264 from Lagos to Benin.


According to verified reports, the aircraft overran the end of Runway 05 at approximately 3:10 p.m. local time and veered into the nearby bush. 


Casualties and Evacuation

Miraculously, there were no fatalities and no injuries recorded. Emergency responders from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) reacted swiftly, safely evacuating all 68 occupants (comprising 63 passengers and 5 crew members) from the stranded aircraft. 

  

In a prompt public statement, the management of Enugu Air confirmed the incident. "We confirm that all passengers and crew have safely disembarked and there were no injuries or casualties. The aircraft has been secured, and the relevant aviation authorities have been notified in line with established procedures," the airline stated, warning passengers of possible temporary flight schedule adjustments.


Runway Closed, Investigations Commence

Following the incident, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) immediately deployed its 'Go Team' to the accident site to secure the aircraft and preserve evidence to determine the exact cause of the runway overrun.

  

Director-General of the NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., commended the swift response, stating: "We are relieved that all passengers and crew members are safe... While this is reassuring, every runway excursion is a serious occurrence that deserves a thorough and independent investigation."

   

Meanwhile, the runway at Benin Airport has been temporarily closed. Following the incident, Air Peace announced the immediate suspension of all its scheduled flights to and from Benin Airport until the runway is cleared and normal operations are restored by airport authorities.
