BREAKING: Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya SAN Emerges 33rd NBA President, Makes History as Second Female Leader

ABUJA — In a landmark victory for the legal profession, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has officially been declared the 33rd President-elect of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). 


Announcing the results at the NBA National Secretariat in Abuja on Sunday morning, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), Aham Ejelam, SAN, confirmed that Badejo-Okusanya secured a decisive victory with 12,317 votes, representing 47.18% of the total votes cast. 


She defeated her closest rival, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, who garnered 7,934 votes (30.39%), while Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, finished third with 5,855 votes (22.43%). A total of 26,106 votes were recorded in the highly contested electronic election.


A Historic Milestone

Badejo-Okusanya’s victory shatters a 35-year glass ceiling. She becomes only the second woman to lead the country’s foremost legal body since its establishment, following in the trailblazing footsteps of Dame Priscilla Kuye, who served as the NBA’s first female president from 1991 to 1992. 


The President-elect, who is a founding partner at Africa Law Practice NG & Company (ALP NG & Co) and former Senior Special Assistant on Justice Sector Reform to the Lagos State Government, will serve a two-year term from 2026 to 2028. She will officially assume office during the NBA Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt later this month, succeeding the incumbent president, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN.


Election Survived 'Attempts to Derail'

The 2026 NBA elections were not without controversy, having been marred by technical glitches, allegations of voting disruptions, and a reported cyberattack that temporarily delayed the process. 


Addressing these challenges following the conclusion of the polls, outgoing NBA President Afam Osigwe, SAN, noted that the election successfully survived attempts to truncate it. He called for unity within the Bar, urging the new leadership to be magnanimous in victory and announcing that a comprehensive review of the electoral process would be conducted to strengthen future exercises. 


While Badejo-Okusanya was not physically present at the announcement due to a flight delay, her campaign team has reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to fostering unity, driving institutional reforms, and charting a progressive course for the Nigerian Bar.
