69th ECOWAS Summit: Tinubu Demands Iron-Clad Action Against Afro-Phobic Attacks in South Africa

The Nigerian Government has drawn a definitive line in the sand regarding the safety of its citizens in the diaspora. 


Speaking at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Freetown, Sierra Leone, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a stinging rebuke of the ongoing Afro-phobic and xenophobic violence in South Africa. 


Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu disclosed that Nigeria has successfully evacuated over 1,490 of its citizens from harm's way in seven rapid batches. He urged the entire West African bloc to drop diplomatic pleasantries and present a united, unyielding front against Pretoria.


"Nigeria condemns, in the strongest terms, the recent attacks on its citizens and other Africans in the Republic of South Africa," the Nigerian leader declared. "South Africa should be reminded that the freedom it currently enjoys is the result of the sacrifices and liberation efforts of African countries, including Nigeria."


Tinubu further demanded that the matter be formally tabled before the African Union (AU) to send a clear message that intolerance and organized violence against fellow Africans will no longer be met with mere wrist-slaps.
