Two decades have passed since the cold hands of death snatched one of Oyo State’s most brilliant minds, but true legacy refuses to be buried. Today, Ayekooto Media opens its archives to remember and celebrate a towering intellectual, a grassroots political titan, and a deeply devoted Islamic scholar: the late Dr. Abdul-Jelil Adebayo Amoloye.

For the younger generation navigating the political terrain of Oyo State today, the question might arise: Who exactly was Dr. Amoloye The Royal Scholar

Born on May 22, 1950, into the Ona-Onibode royal family of Amoloye in Igboho, Dr. Amoloye was a man whose life was a perfect blend of traditional royalty and deep religious conviction. Though rooted in the headquarters of Oorelope Local Government, his early years were shaped in Ibadan, where he laid a solid foundation in Arabic and Islamic education.

He was an academic heavyweight. Gaining admission into the University of Ibadan in 1970, he climbed the academic ladder with relentless focus, earning his B.A. in 1974, his Master’s in 1982, and ultimately his Ph.D. in Arabic and Islamic Studies in 1992. Even as a student, his leadership was undeniable, serving as the Amir of the Muslim Students Society (MSS) and championing the integration of Islamic ideology with modern governance.

The Political Visionary of Oke-Ogun

Dr. Amoloye did not just study governance; he shaped it. As a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1988, he became a frontline advocate for the creation of the Oorelope Local Government under General Ibrahim Babangida’s military administration. He never stopped fighting for his people, continually pushing for the actualization of an Oke-Ogun State.

His commitment to national service saw him appointed as a Federal Commissioner for the National Population Commission (NPC). Yet, it was his grassroots appeal and philosophy of servant-leadership that eventually propelled him to become a formidable gubernatorial aspirant in Oyo State.

The Unmatched Education Reformer

Perhaps Dr. Amoloye’s most enduring legacy lies in the classroom. Serving as the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology under former Governor Rashidi Ladoja, he executed a blueprint of greatness for public schools.

He pioneered the revolutionary "30-Pupils-Per-Class" policy, ensuring quality learning environments. He was a silent philanthropist and a champion of human capital development, reportedly using his influence to help about 30,000 indigent students access tertiary education across the nation.

An Immortal Legacy

Though he departed this world 20 years ago in 2006, his impact remains etched in stone. In 2007, the Oyo State Government posthumously honored him for his outstanding dedication to the sustained growth of education—an honor he shared with the late Archdeacon Emmanuel Alayande.

Today, we at Ayekooto Media remember a man who gave his all to his religion, his state, and his people. Survived by his formidable wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Bilqis Amoloye, and his brilliant children, Dr. Abdul-Jelil Adebayo Amoloye’s blueprint for a better Oyo State remains a standard for today's leaders.

May history continue to be kind to his memory.
